Data Recovery from a Hard Drive or a Computer That Will Not Boot

Data recovery is where honesty matters most. If the operating system does not boot, we can try to recover the data from the computer. There is no promise that everything, or even part of it, will be recovered. We do our best.

We start by checking the drive, and tell you what the odds are before you pay for an attempt. When the drive can be removed, we take it out, connect it to a computer in the lab, scan it and copy what can be saved to another drive. What was recovered goes to you, and the temporary backup we kept during the work is deleted.

Two things change the odds. In many newer laptops and in MacBooks from recent years the storage is soldered to the board and cannot be removed. And a drive encrypted with BitLocker only opens with the recovery key, which is usually saved in your Microsoft account. The full explanation is in the guide on files from a computer that will not turn on.

Until you get here: stop using the drive, and do not install recovery software on it.

When to bring it to us

  • The computer does not boot, and the files are inside
  • You deleted files by mistake
  • An external drive or USB flash drive the computer does not recognize
  • The drive makes a clicking sound

What happens to your computer at the lab

Four steps. At each one you know where your computer is and what is being done to it.

  1. 1

You bring it in, or we come to you

To the lab during opening hours, or a paid technician visit at home. Tell us what happened, even if you are not sure how to describe it.

  2. 2

    Diagnosis and price

We find the fault and explain it in plain words. You get a price before anything is touched.

  3. 3

    Repair and testing

We fix only what you approved. If another problem turns up, we stop and ask. turnaround time not set yet

  4. 4

    Pickup with a warranty

We show you what was fixed and give you a written warranty on the work.

Questions about data recovery

Can everything be recovered?

Not always. If the operating system does not boot, we can try to recover the data from the computer. There is no promise that everything, or even part of it, will be recovered. We do our best.

What should I avoid doing until I get to you?

Stop using the drive. Do not install recovery software on it, and do not write new files to it. A drive that is clicking should be turned off right away.

What happens to my files after the recovery?

They go to you. During the work we keep a temporary backup, and we delete it once your files are back with you. We do not keep a copy.

Can the drive be removed from any computer?

No. In many newer laptops and in MacBooks from recent years the storage is soldered to the motherboard and cannot be removed. There the recovery depends on the board itself working, and the odds are lower.

The drive is encrypted with BitLocker. Does that change anything?

Yes. An encrypted drive only opens with the recovery key, even when it is perfectly healthy. On many Windows 11 computers the encryption is on without you knowing, and the key is saved in your Microsoft account. It is worth finding it before you bring the computer in.
