Before you bring it in: guides
Some problems you can solve yourself. We wrote plain-language guides, with a clear line on when it is better to bring the computer to us.
- Hard drive data recovery when the computer won't turn on or boot: When the computer will not turn on or boot, the files are usually still on the drive, and the drive can be healthy even when the computer is not. In a desktop, and in a laptop with a removable drive, you can take the drive out and read it from another computer through a USB adapter. Two things change that: in MacBooks and some laptops the storage is soldered to the board, and a drive encrypted with BitLocker opens only with the recovery key, which is usually at aka.ms/myrecoverykey.
- Computer backup at home: three methods and which one fits you: A backup is a separate copy of your files that does not disappear when the original does. Most homes do best with an external drive running File History (or Time Machine on a Mac) plus a second copy in the cloud. OneDrive or Google Drive sync alone is not a backup, because a deletion on the computer is deleted in the cloud too.
- Blue screen in Windows: what it means and what to do: A blue screen is an emergency stop by Windows: the system hit an error it cannot safely continue from, and restarts itself. In Windows 11 version 24H2 and later this screen is black. A single screen after an update is usually nothing to worry about, but a screen that keeps coming back calls for checking the drivers, the memory and the disk, based on the stop code shown at the bottom.
- Computer won't turn on: checks before you call a technician: When a computer will not turn on, start with the power: outlet, power strip, cable, and on a desktop also the switch on the back of the power supply. On a laptop, try draining residual power: unplug the charger and hold the power button for about 15 seconds. If lights and fans come on but there is no picture, the problem may be the screen or its cable, not the computer itself.
- Deleted files by mistake: what can be recovered, what not to do: First of all, stop writing to the disk, because a deleted file stays there until something new overwrites it. Then check in order: the Recycle Bin, the OneDrive or Google Drive recycle bin, previous versions, and your backup. On an SSD the chance of recovery is lower, and you must never install recovery software on the disk you are recovering from.
- Hard drive clicking or not detected: what it means, what to do now: Repeated clicking from a mechanical hard drive is usually a sign of a mechanical fault, so you power it off immediately and do not try to copy anything more from it. An external drive that is not detected is checked first at the cable, the power supply and Disk Management, without initializing and without formatting. If the data matters and there is no backup, stop and turn to data recovery.
